To double 2012 exports by 2025
To increase exports to 330,000 tonnes by 2025
1. To double 2012 exports by 2025
The first objective was set by the NZ government in 2025 to double exports by 2025. Onion exports in 2012 were $62mil, this gives the NZ onion industry an objective to export $124mil by 2025. Year end 2016 $116mil was exported, so the industry is well on track to reach this first objective.
2. To increase exports to 330,000 tonnes by 2025
The second objective to increase exports to 330,000 tonnes by 2025 is very reliant on the ability of Onions NZ and the NZ government to negotiate market access for a number of key markets. The majority of the growth is anticipated to be in South East Asia and North Asia, but is reliant on gaining market access to China and a reduction in tariffs in Korea. If these growth objectives are reached, then the onion industry will be exporting approximately $230mil worth of onions and providing many rural communities with a sustainable economy.
